GUINEA PIG RESCUE & BOARDING

FINDING YOUR GUINEA PIG A NEW FRIEND

At the moment we have been inundated with requests to pair up guinea pigs.  Pairing up sows and neutered boars we can do quite quickly once a home visit has been carried out. Regarding pairing up boars with boars, we are giving priority to people who have adopted guinea pigs from us.

Guinea pigs love to have company and it is very sad to see them living on their own.  Some guinea pigs will  not tolerate living with another guinea pig but they are happier if they can hear other guinea pigs around.

When guinea pigs lose their hutch mate they can get very depressed and even refuse to eat.  If this is the case then it is very important to find them a friend as soon as possible.

There has been a lot written and said by vets and experts that you cannot pair up adult male guinea pigs.  This is just not true, at the Wheek & Squeak we have been pairing up both boars and sows since 1998 with great success.

You do need experience to do this and to understand the body language of the guinea pigs. You need to know when to intervene if its not going to work so that there is no injury to the guinea pigs, and when to leave them to it.

If we have suitable guinea pigs available we can offer to find a friend for your boar or sow.  Initially your pig will need to come to the centre for the first stage of the process.

BOARS

In the case of pairing up boars we do ask that they stay at the Wheek & Squeak for around 5 to 7 days so we can get them bonded enough so they can cope with the move to their home.  The first week is very important and need to be monitored very closely.

SOWS AND NEUTERED BOARS

In the case of most sows or neutered boars, bonding is easier and we can see if we have a match on the same day of your visit.  However, some sows can be very difficult and in that case we would recommend bonding similar to boars as mentioned above.

We also give full instructions on how to continue the bonding process and, of course, we are always at the end of the phone to give further support and advice.

Pairing up is very time consuming not only with finding a compatible guinea pig but also the continual monitoring until the guinea pigs go home.  We do not have a set charge for this service but we do hope the new owner will appreciate the amount of work involved and make a suitable donation.

We have been pairing up guinea pigs with new friends for many years now with great success.  The requests for this service has been far greater than we ever envisaged and we have been unable to keep up with the demand.  We have sadly had to make the decision that we can only pair up guinea pigs that have been adopted from us.  We will help others when we can but our time is limited.

GUINEA PIGS AND RABBITS SHOULD NEVER BE PAIRED TOGETHER.  THEY HAVE DIFFERENT DIETS AND RABBITS CAN MAKE A GUINEA PIG'S LIFE A MISERY WITH CONSTANT MOUNTING AND ALSO THEY CAN EASILY BE HURT BY RABBITS THUMPING THEIR FEET.  RABBITS AND GUINEA PIGS ARE MUCH HAPPIER LIVING WITH THEIR OWN KIND.
